Information: Prof. Dr. Otthein Herzog was until late 2009 the head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group, which he built up when he was appointed as a full professor to the Computer Science Department of the University of Bremen in 1993. Before he joined academia, he worked in industrial software development and research with IBM for 16 years, where he collected extensive know-how in many international software product development and numerous AI research projects, including operating systems (DOS/VSE), natural language processing and text understanding (LILOG), information retrieval (IBM SearchManager), CIM software systems, and environmental impact analysis (EXCEPT).
The AI Research Group is fully integrated in the "TZI - Center for Computing and Communication Technologies" of the University of Bremen, which was founded by Dr. Herzog in 1995, which he heads, and which is devoted to the technology development and transfer in the areas of Mobile Computing, Intelligent Systems, and Digital Media.
From March 2000 to February 2002 Dr. Herzog held a position in industry, where many of these ideas were brought productive reality, leading also to the Best Deployed Application Award presented at the Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence 2002 by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence.
For the Academic Years 2000-2004, Dr. Herzog was named Affiliated Distinguished Visiting Research Professor in the School of Computational Sciences (SCS) at George Mason University. His research interests include mobile and wearable computing, knowledge management, multi-agent systems, semantics of time and space, and the application of these technologies, e.g., in logistics, engineering, and multimedia archiving and retrieval. He has published and co-authored more than five books and 60 contributions to conferences and journals.
